Doctor Who: Season 7 - My Thoughts After the Seventh Episode

I am doubtful about the recent (since Clara) writing on Doctor Who. The show seems to have gotten too "huge" for its own good. I know that they are building up to the 50th anniversary, but the majority of the moments don't need to be so cartoonishly uber epic. Also, I like Clara, but she seems like a caricature. She doesn't possess the feel of being a real person that was had by previous companions. The constant quick, witty banter gives the show an air of a comedy from the 1940s. I suppose, though, that if she turns out to be a Time Lord or something, it makes sense for her to be talking like The Doctor.

  1. You know, Captain Jack was also that person who just wouldn't die. They never really explain it, or what Jack is. I wonder if Clara is the same type of thing.

    1. Good point, Dave. Clara being a fixed point makes a lot of sense.

  2. I thought it was quite clear what Jack is. Jack is unable to die because Bad Wolf Rose resurrected him in Parting of the Ways. Silly Rose of course didn't fully grasp her powers and thus resurrected him as an immortal.

I thought that the endless dying of Rory was sillier.

  3. I thought he had that before Rose. I may be wrong in that, but that's why I felt it wasn't quite explained. Maybe Clara has some sort of variation of that happening with her?

And I agree about Rory. For a while there, he was almost turning into Kenny from South Park. At first, I was worried that they were going to do the same thing with Clara as they did with Rory.

  4. I also have a sinking feeling that they are increasingly making it feel like a CW show in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience.

  5. Jack was not undying before Rose brought him back. He was a Time Agent so he had the ability to travel any-when he chose. If you try some of the Torchwood episodes you will find out a bit more on his history.

I want to like Clara but I'm uncomfortable about this Doctor. Matt Smith is a great person and a good actor but I don't know, his Doctor just doesn't sit well with me. At the end of the last episode I was seriously concerned that they were going to wipe all those memories from him for good. Until proven otherwise, I am still paranoid about it.

    1. It's on the list for us to watch. Unfortunately, with the two jobs and college, I just do not have time for other programs. When I do have time, that will be on the list.

    2. I feel the same way about this Doctor and Matt Smith. The writing doesn't do his acting ability justice.

  7. I'm happy to say that, after episode eight of this season, Doctor Who is back to the way that it should be. The dialogue is more natural again and the action no longer feels like a cartoon. The Doctor wasn't hamming it up and Clara seems like a real person now. Let's hope that they maintain a level of fine quality.
